EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon" published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838, showcases two intriguing and distinctly colored coucal species: the Pied Coucal (Centropus ateralbus) and the Violet Coucal, also known as the Violaceous Coucal (Centropus violaceus). The Pied Coucal, with its black and white plumage, is depicted on the left side of the image. This bird, native to Africa, is characterized by its distinctive black and white plumage, with a white neck and underparts, and black back, wings, and tail. The Pied Coucal is a cuckoo, meaning it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds, and feeds mainly on insects and reptiles. On the right side of the image, the Violet Coucal, or Violaceous Coucal, is depicted. This bird, native to Africa and Asia, is known for its striking violet-blue sheen, with a white neck and underparts, and a violet-blue back, wings, and tail. The Violet Coucal is also a cuckoo, and its diet consists mainly of insects and reptiles. The intricate details of these birds are beautifully captured in this hand-colored copperplate engraving, providing a glimpse into the natural history and ornithology of the 19th century. The engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of the time, and serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity of the world's avian population.
