1964 Charrington Boozer Rigger

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this evocative photograph of the Square Rigger pub, located in Monument, London, in the 1960s. The image captures the traditional charm of the public house, with its distinctive signage and brick facade. The Square Rigger was a cherished local institution, having served the community since at least 1963, as evidenced by the trading record inscribed on the back of the print. The pub, which was part of the Charrington and Company Limited estate, was a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Its location near the Monument tube station and the iconic Monument to the Great Fire of London made it a convenient stop for travelers and history buffs. Unfortunately, like many historic buildings in urban areas, the Square Rigger was unable to withstand the relentless march of progress. By 1964, the pub had been demolished to make way for a modern office block above retail outlets, including the Be at One bar. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, when community pubs were the heart and soul of the neighborhood. The Square Rigger's story is a common one in the annals of urban development, but its memory lives on through images like this one. This photograph is a testament to the power of photography to preserve history and evoke emotion, transporting us back to a time when life moved a little slower and community meant a little more.
