In the early 1900s, two men found themselves at the controls of a Sunderland flying boat, soaring through the skies above Polpeor Cove in Landewednack, Cornwall. The year was 1908, and this remarkable photograph captures their daring adventure. Meanwhile, in Monument, London, another image showcases the Square Rigger PH. This magnificent vessel stands tall as a testament to maritime history and the skilled riggers who meticulously constructed her sails. Speaking of rigging innovation, we cannot forget A. Flint and Mr. Farey's groundbreaking invention - expanding riggers. These ingenious contraptions revolutionized sailing by allowing for greater control and efficiency on board ships. But not all "riggers" were involved in such noble pursuits. In bustling London streets, a thimble-rigger attempted to deceive unsuspecting passersby with his clever tricks. Crowds gathered around him as he skillfully manipulated thimbles to hide small objects from view. Across the English Channel in Le Havre during 1886, squared-riggers dominated the harbor scene. Painted on canvas by an unknown artist, this captivating artwork immortalizes these majestic vessels that relied on intricate rigging systems to navigate treacherous waters. Traveling back further in time to 1830s Poplar district of London brings us to West India Docks where William Parrott captured a snapshot activity amidst bustling trade routes. The docks buzzed with energy as riggers worked tirelessly to ensure smooth operations for incoming and outgoing ships. Fast forward almost a century later; we find ourselves flipping through an Army and Navy Stores Catalogue from 1939-40 featuring various tools used by riggers across different industries - evidence of their versatility beyond just maritime endeavors. Venturing far beyond British shores takes us to Borneo where Milton's engraving depicts a Caracore - an indigenous boat intricately rigged for navigating local waterways.
