EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a delightful arrangement of various mushroom species, including the Half-Free Morel (Morchella semilibera), Jelly Baby (Leotia lubrica), and False Morel (Verpa digitaliformis), accompanied by their more familiar counterpart, the Morel (Morchella). The Half-Free Morel, also known as the Semi-Free Morel, is a highly prized edible mushroom with a distinctive cap that is partially free from the stem. The Jelly Baby, or Leotia, is a jelly-like fungus with a translucent cap and a slime-covered stem. The False Morel, or Verpa, is not an edible species and can be easily confused with the Morel due to their similar appearance. This beautiful illustration is from Leon Rolland's Guide to Mushrooms from France, Switzerland, and Belgium, published in 1910 by Paul Klincksieck in Paris. The illustration was created by A. Bessin and expertly reproduced as a chromolithograph by Lassus. Chromolithography is a printing technique that uses multiple lithographic stones, each coated with a different color, to create a richly detailed and vibrant image. Mycology, the study of fungi, has long been a fascination for naturalists and food enthusiasts alike. Mushrooms, in particular, have captivated the imagination with their diverse shapes, sizes, and colors. This charming print is not only a testament to the beauty and intrigue of these fascinating organisms but also a reminder of the rich natural history of France, Switzerland, and Belgium.
