EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie-Henriette de France, Sister of King Louis XIII, Queen Consort of England (1633) This striking handcoloured lithograph depicts Marie-Henriette de France (1609-1665), the eldest sister of King Louis XIII of France, in her role as Queen Consort of England, married to King Charles I (1600-1649). The portrait was originally painted in 1633 by an unknown artist and later published in Le Bibliophile Jacob's Costumes Historiques de la France (Historical Costumes of France) in 1852. Marie-Henriette was the daughter of Henry IV of France and Marie de' Medici. In 1625, she was married to the future King Charles I of England, then a prince, in a political alliance aimed at strengthening the relationship between France and England. The marriage was celebrated with great pomp and ceremony, and Marie-Henriette was welcomed warmly by the English people. In this portrait, Marie-Henriette is depicted in the regal attire of a queen, wearing a richly embroidered gown of gold and silver thread, adorned with pearls and other precious stones. Her hair is styled in elaborate curls, and she wears a diamond diadem on her head. The background features a sumptuous velvet drapery, adding to the grandeur and opulence of the image. Marie-Henriette's marriage to Charles I was a tumultuous one, marked by political instability and conflict. She bore him ten children, but only three survived to adulthood. After her husband's execution in 1649, Marie-Henriette returned to France, where she lived out the rest of her days in seclusion. This beautiful lithograph is a testament to the elegance and sophistication of the French and English courts during the early modern period, and offers a glimpse into the world of royalty and nobility of the time.
