Lee Church

View of the medaeval church which has long since been demolished. This was replaced in 1814, then in the 1830s demolished to make way for the present St Margarets Church, built in 1839 to accommodate a growing congregation. However, the tower of the 1814 church remains in the old churchyard on the north side of Lee Terrace. Date: 1875

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the view of the medieval Lee Church, which once stood proudly in the heart of Lee, a historic suburb in the east of London. The church, with its intricate stonework and ancient charm, had long been a landmark and spiritual center for the community. However, by the mid-19th century, the growing population and expanding congregation necessitated a larger place of worship. In 1814, the medieval church was replaced with a new one, designed to accommodate the increasing number of parishioners. Yet, even this newer structure proved insufficient, and in the 1830s, it was demolished to make way for the present St Margaret's Church, which was completed in 1839. Despite the demolition, a remnant of the past remains. The tower of the 1814 church, a silent sentinel of history, continues to stand tall in the old churchyard on the north side of Lee Terrace. This photograph, taken in 1875, offers a glimpse into the past, revealing the rich history and architectural evolution of Lee's religious landscape. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the passage of time and the ever-changing nature of our urban environments.
