EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph, taken in 1875, captures the beauty and charm of John Milton's former residence in Petty France, Westminster. The garden house, where Milton lived until the Restoration, stands as a testament to the rich literary history of this location. Milton, a renowned English poet, is best known for his epic poem "Paradise Lost." He lived in this house during a pivotal period of his life, producing some of his most celebrated works. After Milton's departure, the property passed through the hands of several notable figures. Jeremy Bentham, the philosopher and social reformer, later owned the house. Subsequently, it was occupied by James Mill, a Scottish philosopher and economist, and William Hazlitt, a prominent essayist and literary critic. Despite its storied past, the garden house was eventually demolished in 1877. This photograph, taken just two years before its demise, offers a rare glimpse into the past, allowing us to imagine the lives of these literary giants as they once lived and worked in this picturesque Westminster setting.
