EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases a fascinating assemblage of three distinct species: the Jewel Beetle (Buprestis ocellata), the Scarlet Cantharis (Tenebrionis scarabaeoides, formerly known as Cantharis hoemorrhoidalis), and the Common Hermit Crab (Pagurus bernhardus, formerly known as Cancer bernardus). Sydenham Edwards, a renowned English naturalist, meticulously documented these creatures for John Mason Good's Pantologia, a New Encyclopedia, published in London in 1813. The Jewel Beetle, also known as the Blue-spotted Jewel Beetle, is a striking insect with a vibrant, iridescent green exoskeleton adorned with intricate blue spots. Its elongated body and powerful mandibles make it a formidable presence in the natural world. The Scarlet Cantharis, or Soldier Beetle, is easily recognizable by its bright red exoskeleton and distinctive, elongated hind legs. These legs enable the beetle to jump great distances, making it an agile and effective predator. The Common Hermit Crab, a familiar sight along sandy shores, is shown in its characteristic posture, hiding within an empty gastropod shell for protection. With its long, slender claws, it can easily maneuver its shell and search for food among the sand and rocks. This exquisite engraving not only highlights the beauty and intricacy of these creatures but also serves as a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship of the engraver and the dedication of Sydenham Edwards to documenting the natural world.
