EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Jacques Cartier, French Breton Explorer (1491-1557) This handcoloured lithograph depicts Jacques Cartier, a renowned French Breton explorer, navigator, and the first European to explore and establish relations with the Iroquoian peoples of Canada. Born in Saint-Malo, Brittany, France, in 1491, Cartier embarked on his first voyage to the New World in 1534, sponsored by King Francis I of France. The image, created by Leopold Massard after a figure in Roger de Gaignières portfolios from Le Bibliophile Jacob aka Paul Lacroix's Costumes Historiques de la France (Historical Costumes of France), published in Paris in 1852, captures the essence of Cartier's explorer persona. Dressed in the attire of the era, Cartier is shown wearing a fur-trimmed coat, a hat adorned with a feather, and a belt with a sword at his side. His determined gaze and confident posture convey his exploratory spirit and adventurous nature. Cartier's voyages to the New World led to the establishment of the first French settlements in North America, paving the way for French colonization. His explorations also resulted in the introduction of various indigenous peoples, their cultures, and resources to Europe. This significant historical figure played a crucial role in the early history of both France and Canada. The intricately handcoloured details in this lithograph not only bring the image to life but also serve as a testament to the artistic mastery of the time. The rich colours and textures of the fur, the meticulously drawn details of Cartier's clothing, and the subtle shading all contribute to a captivating visual representation of this influential explorer.
