EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the Griffon Vulture, Gyps fulvus, also known as the Old World Vulture or Eurasian Griffon Vulture. The image is taken from a specimen held by the esteemed Royal Society in London and was meticulously produced by the skilled engraver, Peter Brown, for the publication "New Illustrations of Zoology" by B. White in 1776. The Griffon Vulture is a large bird of prey, with a wingspan reaching up to 3 meters, making it one of the largest flying birds in Europe. Its distinctive features include its broad wings, bald head, and powerful beak. The bird's feathers are predominantly brown, with some black and white feathers on its wings and tail. The Griffon Vulture is a scavenger, feeding primarily on carrion and bones. Its strong beak and powerful stomach acid enable it to break down the toughest of animal hides and bones. This vulture is widely distributed across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, and is an important species in its ecosystem due to its role in breaking down animal carcasses and recycling nutrients. The Tawny Vulture, Falco ambustus, is a different species entirely, a bird of prey belonging to the Falconidae family. It is a small, agile bird with a distinctive brown and white plumage, and is native to Africa and southern Europe. Despite their similar names, the two species are not closely related and can be easily distinguished by their distinct morphology and behavior.
