EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured steel engraving depicts the Greater Spearwort, Ranunculus lingua, also known as Renoncule grande-douve. The botanical illustration was created by Edouard Maubert and engraved by L. Noel for the horticultural and agricultural publication "La Regne Vegetal: Planets Agricoles et Forestieres," published by Pierre Oscar Reveil, A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincqs in Paris between 1864 and 1871. The Greater Spearwort is a perennial aquatic or semi-aquatic plant native to Europe, Asia, and North America. It is characterized by its long, slender rhizomes and distinctive, arrow-shaped leaves that can grow up to 15 cm long. The plant produces yellow or white flowers with five petals, which bloom in late spring and early summer. The intricate details of the Greater Spearwort's leaves, stems, and flowers are beautifully rendered in this botanical illustration. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, highlighting the plant's unique features. The engraving process, which involved etching lines into a metal plate and then printing from that plate, allowed for precise detail and high-quality reproduction. Botanical illustrations like this one were an essential tool for botanists and horticulturists during the 19th century, helping to document and classify plant species from around the world. Today, they remain valuable resources for scientific research and conservation efforts, as well as for their aesthetic appeal.
