This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the legendary combat between Roland, a renowned paladin of Charlemagne's court, and the colossal giant Ferracut, also known as Goliath in some versions of the story. The illustration is based on the epic poem "Orlando Furioso" by Ludovico Ariosto, which chronicles the adventures of the heroic Roland and his comrades. Roland, clad in full armour and mounted on his horse, faces the monstrous Ferracut, who towers over him with menacing strength. Roland brandishes his sword, ready to strike, while Ferracut raises his massive club, threatening to crush the brave knight. The intense battle scene is set against the backdrop of a medieval castle, with its towering walls and battlements, reflecting the chivalric and romantic spirit of the time. The legend of Roland and Ferracut is deeply rooted in European folklore and has been passed down through generations in the form of songs, ballads, and stories.
