EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate print, created by Andrea Bernieri in 1843 as part of Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World, offers a unique glimpse into the rich tapestry of Chinese deities and their respective domains. The central figures in this illustration are three revered Chinese deities: Lauzi, Fo, and Confucius. Lauzi, depicted at the top left, is the God of Thunder and Rain. He is often portrayed with a drum and a lightning bolt, symbolizing his power over the elements. His presence is crucial for the agricultural cycle, ensuring the growth of crops through the essential rainfall. Beside Lauzi, Amitabha Buddha, or Fo, is depicted in a serene and contemplative pose. As the Buddha of Infinite Light and Infinite Life, Fo is a central figure in Mahayana Buddhism. His image is commonly used as a focus for meditation and is believed to represent the ultimate goal of enlightenment. At the bottom right, Confucius, the great Chinese philosopher, is shown with a stern expression and dressed in traditional scholar's robes. Confucianism, with its emphasis on ethics, morality, and social harmony, has had a profound impact on Chinese culture and continues to influence Chinese society to this day. Surrounding these three central figures are various gods representing the elements and aspects of Chinese culture. Gods of war, earth, water, and stone are depicted, each with their unique symbols and attributes. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this print serve not only as a testament to Andrea Bernieri's artistic skill but also as a window into the rich and complex world of Chinese mythology and philosophy.
