EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, published in Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals in 1836, showcases two of Africa's most majestic and distinctive large antelope species: the Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus) and the Common Eland (Taurotragus oryx). The Bushbuck, with its dark, glossy coat and distinctive white markings on its rump and face, is a forest-dwelling antelope found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The species is well adapted to living in dense vegetation, with its small, curved horns and agile body allowing it to navigate through the thickest foliage with ease. Bushbucks are herbivores, feeding on a variety of vegetation, including leaves, shoots, and fruits. The Common Eland, the largest antelope in Africa, is depicted in this image with its impressive, sweeping horns and powerful, muscular build. Found in savannas and woodlands across eastern and southern Africa, these animals are known for their impressive endurance and speed, able to outrun predators over long distances. Elands are also herbivores, feeding on a diet of grasses, leaves, and shoots. Brodtmann's meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the unique features of these animals make this lithograph a true masterpiece of zoological illustration. The image provides a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating creatures, offering a window into the rich biodiversity of Africa's wildlife.
