Common Eland Collection

The Common Eland (Taurotragus oryx) is a species of antelope found in eastern and southern Africa, and is the second largest antelope in the world, after the Giant Eland, and can reach up to 1.6 m (5.2 ft) tall at the shoulder and weigh up to 942 kg (2,077 lb), and are herbivores that feed on grasses, leaves, herbs, shrubs and fruits. They live in herds of up to 500 individuals which are led by a dominant male. They have distinctive white stripes on their sides which help them blend into their environment as camouflage from predators such as lions and hyenas. The gestation period for Common Elands is around nine months with one calf born per year; calves will remain with their mothers until they reach maturity at two years old. These animals are currently listed as "Least Concern" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature due to their large population size throughout Africa but some populations have been affected by hunting for meat or sport.
