EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Antoine Coiffier, Marquis d'Effiat: Marshal of France and Superintendent of Finances to King Louis XIII" This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts Antoine Coiffier, Marquis d'Effiat, a prominent figure during the reign of King Louis XIII of France. Born in 1581, Coiffier rose through the ranks to become one of the most influential men at the French court. He served as both Marshal of France and Superintendent of Finances, holding immense power and responsibility. The image, taken from Jean Valdor's print in "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix, published in Paris in 1852, showcases Coiffier in his formal attire. He is depicted wearing a richly decorated doublet, with intricate lace collars and cuffs, a voluminous cloak, and a plumed hat. The Marquis d'Effiat's regal bearing and piercing gaze convey a sense of authority and importance. Coiffier's tenure as Superintendent of Finances was marked by his successful efforts to stabilize the French economy, which had been plagued by financial instability. His military career was equally impressive, with numerous victories under his belt. In 1616, he led the French forces to a decisive victory against the Protestant rebels in La Rochelle, solidifying his position as a trusted advisor and military commander to King Louis XIII. The handcoloured lithograph not only serves as a testament to Coiffier's significant role in French history but also offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the French court during the early 17th century.
