EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts the American Sarsaparilla plant, Smilax aristolochiifolia, also known as Vera Cruz or Mexican Sarsaparilla, and Smilax medica. The botanical illustration was created by David Blair and published in Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's Medicinal Plants, a comprehensive work on the medicinal properties of various plants, published in London in 1880. The American Sarsaparilla plant is a climbing vine native to the southeastern United States and Mexico. It is characterized by its long, slender stems, which bear alternate, oblong-elliptic leaves, and small, white or pinkish flowers. The plant is best known for its edible, red, berry-like fruits, which are often used in traditional herbal medicine. American Sarsaparilla was highly valued by indigenous peoples for its medicinal properties. It was used to treat a variety of ailments, including rheumatism, syphilis, and skin conditions. European settlers adopted its use and it became a popular ingredient in herbal remedies. The plant contains several active compounds, including sarsaparilloside, which is believed to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It was also used as a blood purifier and a diuretic. This beautiful handcoloured lithograph captures the intricate details of the American Sarsaparilla plant, from its slender stems and oblong leaves to its small, pinkish flowers and red, berry-like fruits. It is a testament to the beauty and complexity of the natural world and the importance of documenting the medicinal properties of plants for future generations.
