EDITORS COMMENTS
Alfred the Great: A Visionary Monarch of Anglo-Saxon England This evocative image captures the regal presence of Alfred the Great, the renowned monarch of the West Saxons from 871 to 886 and later the king of the Anglo-Saxons from 886 until his death in 899. Born in 848 or 849, Alfred was the eldest son of King Aethewulf of Wessex. His reign is marked by his unwavering determination to defend his kingdom against Viking invasions and to promote learning and culture. During his early years, Alfred faced numerous challenges as the Viking forces, led by Guthrum and Ivar the Boneless, laid waste to much of Wessex. However, Alfred's strategic prowess and military acumen enabled him to turn the tide of battle. In 878, at the Battle of Edington, Alfred's forces decisively defeated the Viking army, marking a significant turning point in the history of England. Alfred's reign was not only defined by his military accomplishments but also by his commitment to education and learning. He established a network of schools and scholarships, translating important texts from Latin into Old English to ensure that his people could access knowledge. Alfred's efforts laid the foundation for the development of a literate society in England, paving the way for the future growth of the English language and culture. This portrait of Alfred the Great serves as a testament to his visionary leadership and enduring legacy. His reign marked a critical period in the history of England, as the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms began to coalesce into a unified nation. Alfred's unwavering commitment to education, defense, and unity continues to inspire generations, making him one of the most revered figures in English history.
