EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1802, showcases an intriguing encounter between three distinct aquatic mammals: an African manatee (Trichechus senegalensis), harbor seals (Phoca vitulina), and a harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus). The African manatee, also known as the West Indian manatee or the West Indian sea cow, is a large, gentle aquatic mammal native to the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico. This vulnerable species is depicted gracefully floating on its back, its wrinkled, grayish-brown skin glistening in the water. Manatees are herbivores, feeding on a variety of submerged and emergent vegetation. The harbor seals in the illustration are represented by two different varieties: Phoca vitulina variegata and Phoca vitulina vitulina. The variegated harbor seal, also known as the spotted harbor seal, can be identified by its distinctive dark spots on its coat. The other harbor seal variant, the common harbor seal, is shown with a smooth, dark coat. These seals are highly adaptable and can be found in the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, as well as the Baltic and North Seas. They are excellent swimmers and divers, feeding primarily on fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. The harp seal, shown in the engraving with its distinctive white coat and black spots, is a large, powerful seal species native to the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. Harp seals are named for their distinctive harp-shaped markings on their back. They are skilled hunters and divers, feeding primarily on fish and crustaceans. This beautiful and intricate illustration not only showcases the unique characteristics of these fascinating aquatic mammals but also highlights the rich natural history knowledge available in early children's literature.
