Harp Seal Collection

The Harp Seal (Phocidae) is a species of mammal in the family Phocidae, which includes all true seals, and are found throughout the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, from Greenland to Russia and Norway. Harp Seals typically have white fur with black spots on their back, although some may be completely white or dark grey and can grow up to 1.8m long and weigh up to 140kg. They feed mainly on fish and crustaceans such as shrimp, squid and octopus but also eat some plant material such as kelp. Their main predators are polar bears, killer whales and humans who hunt them for their fur or blubber. Harp Seals live in large colonies during breeding season but spend most of the year alone or in small groups when they migrate further north for food during winter months. Conservation efforts have helped increase their population size over the past few decades but they still remain vulnerable due to hunting pressure from humans as well as climate change impacts on their habitat.
