EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-coloured engraving is a beautiful representation of the Mesoplodon bidens, also known as Sowerby's beaked whale, taken from Plate 12 of The Naturalists Library, Mammalia, Vol. 12 Whales, published between 1833 and 1843. The illustration was drawn by James Hope Stewart and engraved by an unknown artist, under the direction of Sir William Jardine. The Mesoplodon bidens is a large, elusive, and little-known cetacean, belonging to the family of beaked whales. Measuring up to 5 meters in length, this eutherian mammal is found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, preferring deep, offshore waters. They are rarely seen due to their elusive nature and deep-diving behavior, which can reach up to 2,000 meters below the surface. Sowerby's beaked whale is an endangered species, primarily due to commercial whaling in the past. They were hunted for their blubber, which was used for oil production. Today, their population is still threatened by accidental entanglement in fishing gear and habitat destruction. This illustration provides a unique glimpse into the natural history of this fascinating marine mammal, captured in exquisite detail during the 19th century. The intricate engraving technique brings out the intricacies of the whale's body, from its sleek, streamlined shape to the distinctive beak-like structure that gives beaked whales their name. As we admire the beauty of this illustration, it serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting endangered species like the Mesoplodon bidens and preserving the delicate balance of our marine ecosystems.
