EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunningly detailed model showcases the impressive features of Megaloceros gigantius, also known as the Irish Elk, a giant deer species that roamed Europe during the late Pleistocene epoch, around 11,000 to 130,000 years ago. Native to Ireland and other parts of Europe, this extinct ungulate was the largest deer ever to have existed, with antlers reaching up to 12 feet in width. Megaloceros gigantius was an even-toed ungulate, belonging to the family Cervidae, and was classified under the order Artiodactyla, which includes even-toed ungulates such as deer, pigs, and camels. As a placental mammal, this giant deer was part of the class Mammalia, which includes all mammals that nurse their young with milk. The Irish Elk was characterized by its massive, palmated antlers, which were covered in a velvety texture during the growing season. These antlers were not only used for display and mating purposes but also played a crucial role in the animal's survival, helping it to navigate through dense forests and defend itself against predators. Despite its name, the Irish Elk was not actually confined to Ireland, but rather was distributed throughout Europe. Fossil remains of this magnificent creature have been found in various locations, providing valuable insights into the ecology and behavior of this fascinating mammal. This model provides a captivating glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the grandeur and majesty of the Irish Elk, a truly awe-inspiring creature that once graced our planet.
