EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts a mace-bearer in the presence of King Louis XII during the 16th century. The mace-bearer, an essential figure in the royal court, is shown holding the ceremonial mace, a symbol of the king's authority and power. King Louis XII, dressed in his regal attire, is depicted with a serious expression, emphasizing his role as a powerful monarch. The miniature, hand-colored illustration is taken from Georges Duplessis' "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867. This work was a continuation of the series on the costumes of the 12th to 15th centuries, which was published by Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri from 1830. Georges Duplessis, the curator of the Prints department at the Bibliotheque nationale, collaborated with Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard, an artist, book illustrator, and interior designer, to create this stunning visual representation of historical costumes. Lechevallier-Chevignard's expertise in illustration and design is evident in the intricate details and vibrant colors of this image. The mace-bearer's elaborate costume, consisting of a fur-trimmed robe, a tall hat adorned with feathers, and a long, flowing beard, adds to the grandeur of the scene. The rich textures and patterns of the fabrics, as well as the meticulous attention to detail in the accessories, such as the intricately designed belt and the ornate mace, further highlight the opulence of the royal court during the 16th century. This image provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and splendor of the French monarchy during the reign of King Louis XII.
