EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Louis II, Duke of Bourbon, also known as the Good (1337-1410), as he sets sail from Genoa to lead the Mahdia Crusade in North Africa in 1390. The Mahdia Crusade was a significant military campaign during the late Middle Ages, aimed at defending Christendom against the perceived threat of the Barbary pirates and the Islamic world. Louis II, a French nobleman, was a renowned military leader and a devout Christian. In response to the growing menace of the Barbary pirates, who were raiding Christian ships and coastal towns, Louis II rallied the forces of Europe to launch a counterattack. With the support of King Charles VI of France and Pope Boniface IX, Louis II embarked on this perilous journey, accompanied by a fleet of ships and a formidable army. The engraving, produced in 1881, is based on the Chronicles of Jean Froissart, a 15th-century manuscript that chronicles the events of the Hundred Years War and other significant European conflicts. The vibrant colors of the image bring the scene to life, with Louis II standing proudly on the deck of his ship, surrounded by his knights and soldiers. The horses and other animals on board are also depicted in rich detail, adding to the sense of realism and authenticity. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the fate of Europe hung in the balance, and brave knights like Louis II set sail to defend their lands and their faith. The Mahdia Crusade may be a lesser-known chapter in European history, but it remains an important reminder of the courage and determination of the medieval warriors who fought to protect their world from external threats.
