EDITORS COMMENTS
In this and historically significant image, Byzantine Emperor Heraclius (575-641 AD) is depicted in resplendent red surtout, brandishing a cross, as he engages in combat with the Persian King Khosrau II (590-628 AD) on a bridge over the Danube River. The painting, an exquisite handcoloured etching by Thomas Fisher, is a testament to the pivotal Cosmas and Damian Battle that took place in 626 AD. The Byzantine Empire, under the leadership of Emperor Heraclius, was under siege by the Sassanid Persian forces, led by King Khosrau II. The battle, which took place on the bridge over the Danube River, was a turning point in the history of the Byzantine Empire and the Christian world. According to legend, Heraclius, inspired by his faith, charged into battle with his cross as a weapon, leading his troops to a decisive victory. The painting, located on the north side of the Chancel in the Chapel of the Trinity in Stratford upon Avon, England, is a visual representation of this legendary moment in history. The intricate details of the clothing, weapons, and expressions of the figures in the painting convey the intensity and drama of the battle scene. The use of handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning work of art that transports us back in time to witness this momentous event. Emperor Heraclius' victory over King Khosrau II marked the end of the Persian threat to the Byzantine Empire and paved the way for the spread of Christianity in Europe during the Crusades. This painting is a visual reminder of the power of faith, courage, and determination in the face of adversity.
