EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured lantern slide, titled "The Loss of H.M.S Victoria," depicts a poignant and symbolic image of Britannia, the personification of Britain, mourning the loss of the lead ship of her class, H.M.S. Victoria. Britannia is shown sitting solemnly on an anchor, draped in the Union Jack, with a lion at her feet on a rocky beach. The HMS Victoria was a proud addition to the Royal Navy, with her sister ship forming the second battleship of the same class. However, on October 22, 1893, near Tripoli, the HMS Victoria collided with HMS Camperdown, resulting in the tragic sinking of the former, taking the lives of 358 brave crew members. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the British Navy during this period, encapsulating the spirit of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. The slide, which is part of Box 195 entitled "Curtains & Flags," is estimated to date from around 1911, providing a historical perspective on this significant maritime event.
