The Ottoman Empire, which then ruled Libya, was determined to maintain control over the region, but Italy had other plans. The Italian army, led by General Pietro Badoglio, had landed near the coastal town of Tripoli with the intention of seizing the wells, which were a vital source of water for both sides. The Ottoman forces, numbering around 1,500 men, launched a fierce attack on the Italian defenders, who were heavily outnumbered but determined to hold their ground. The Italians, numbering around 500 men, were positioned strategically around the wells, using every available advantage to repel the Ottoman assault.
