EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "An Illustrated Homage to Ancient Wind Instruments: Lituus, Buccina, Cornet, and Trumpets" This chromolithograph, an exquisite illustration by the renowned English artist William Gibb, presents a captivating tableau of ancient wind instruments: the Lituus, Buccina, Cornet, and Trumpets. This illustration is taken from A.J. Hipkins' "Musical Instruments, Historic, Rare and Unique," published by Adam and Charles Black in Edinburgh in 1888. Alfred James Hipkins (1826-1903), an English musicologist, was a pioneer in the field of pianoforte history and the study of various musical instruments. In this comprehensive work, he meticulously documented these rare and historic wind instruments, providing both visual and contextual insights. The Lituus, depicted at the far left, is an ancient Roman instrument resembling a large, curved trumpet. Its distinctive shape was believed to mimic the horn of Jupiter, the Roman god of thunder. The Buccina, the next instrument to the right, is a large, conical horn used in ancient Rome for signaling and military purposes. The Cornet, located in the middle of the illustration, is a compact, conical-bore, brass instrument with a flared bell. It evolved from the medieval hunting horn and was widely used in military bands and fanfares during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Lastly, the Trumpets, with their distinctive flared bells and conical bore, are the most recognizable instruments in this ensemble. Their use can be traced back to ancient civilizations, with the earliest known depictions dating back to Egypt and the Middle East. This stunning chromolithograph not only serves as a visual testament to the rich history of wind instruments but also invites us to explore the fascinating stories and cultural significance behind each of these ancient musical treasures.
