EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts Johann Fust (circa 1400-1466), a pivotal figure in the early history of printing. Fust was a German merchant and moneylender, who played a crucial role in promoting the art of printing as the business partner of the legendary inventor Johann Gutenberg. Their partnership, which began around 1450, proved to be a game-changer in the world of information dissemination. Fust is best known for his financial support of Gutenberg's groundbreaking printing press, which revolutionized the production of books. However, their partnership was not without its challenges. In 1455, a dispute arose between the two men, leading Fust to bring a lawsuit against Gutenberg to recover the money he had lent. Despite this setback, Fust's belief in the potential of the printing press remained unwavering. In addition to his association with Gutenberg, Fust also collaborated with Peter Schöffer (circa 1425-1469), another influential figure in the printing world. Schöffer is renowned for his work on the "Melanchthon Bible," one of the first Bibles to be printed in the Gothic blackletter typeface. Fust's contributions to the printing industry extended beyond his financial backing, as he also employed skilled craftsmen and oversaw the production of high-quality printed works. This photograph, taken circa 1450, captures the enigmatic figure of Johann Fust as he stands at the forefront of the printing revolution. His legacy as a patron of the arts and a pioneer in the world of printing continues to inspire generations of scholars, historians, and book lovers alike.
