The Budokwai, meaning "place of the martial way," was a Japanese martial arts society founded in London in 1912, dedicated to the study and promotion of traditional Japanese martial arts. In this image, we see a group of martial artists engaging in bouts using various weapons, including "saucepan lids," sickles with chains, and Japanese halberds. These unconventional weapons were part of the Nabebuta, Kusarigama, and Naginata fighting styles. The Nabebuta, also known as the "demon-subduing sword," was a weapon with a long handle and a large, flat blade resembling a saucepan lid. The Kusarigama was a sickle with a chain attached, used for both farming and combat. The Naginata was a pole weapon with a curved, single-edged blade. The martial artists are seen wearing ceremonial armour, adding to the traditional and authentic atmosphere of the event. In addition to the weapon demonstrations, there is also a display of Judo, a martial art that emphasizes throws, joint locks, and submission holds.
