EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time during the winter of World War II, as Finnish soldiers diligently construct fortifications around the outskirts of Helsinki. The image bears witness to the resilience and determination of the Finnish people during the Continuation War against the Soviet Union. The Second World War reached Finnish shores in 1939 when the Soviet Union launched an invasion, leading to the Winter War. After the signing of the Moscow Peace Treaty in 1940, Finland was forced to cede territory to the Soviet Union but remained independent. However, in 1941, Finland joined Germany in a military alliance against the Soviet Union, marking the beginning of the Continuation War. During this period, the Finnish military focused on fortifying their capital city, Helsinki, to protect against a potential Soviet invasion. The soldiers in this photograph can be seen working in the snow, shovels in hand, as they build up the city's defences. The image is a poignant reminder of the harsh realities of war and the sacrifices made by soldiers during this time. The fortifications in Helsinki were an essential part of Finland's defence strategy during the Continuation War. Despite the challenging conditions, the Finnish military managed to hold off the Soviet advance, and the city remained under Finnish control. Today, some of these fortifications still stand as a testament to the resilience and bravery of the Finnish people during this tumultuous period in their history.
