EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the rugged terrain of the Trentino province, on the Italian-Austro-Hungarian border during World War I, Italian troops laboriously haul a heavy mortar up a steep mountain slope. The year is 1915, and the scene is one of intense determination and grit as the soldiers work together to bring the artillery piece into position. The Italian army faced significant challenges in the mountainous regions of Trentino, where the steep terrain made transportation of heavy artillery a daunting task. To facilitate the movement of artillery, the Italians constructed special tracks and utilized the strength of their troops to pull and push the mortar up the slope. In this poignant image, we see the soldiers, dressed in their military uniforms, working in unison to accomplish the arduous task at hand. Their faces are etched with concentration and effort, as they strain to move the massive mortar inch by inch up the mountain. The mortar, with its intricate details and large barrel, dominates the scene, a testament to the military might of the Italian forces. This photograph, taken by renowned Italian photographer Fortunino Matania, captures the raw power and resilience of the Italian soldiers during the First World War. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women who fought in the war, and the challenges they faced in the harsh and unforgiving terrain of the Trentino province.
