HMS Orion: A Symbol of British Naval Power during the Great War This evocative photograph captures the majesty and might of HMS Orion, the first British dreadnought to surpass the 12-inch gun calibre, as she cuts through the waves in 1914. Launched in August 1910 and commissioned in January 1912, the Orion was a testament to the technological advancements and industrial prowess of the Royal Navy during the early 20th century. The Orion's impressive dimensions - she measured 555 feet in length and displaced over 21,000 tons - made her a formidable presence on the high seas. Her ten 13.5-inch guns were a significant improvement over the 12-inch guns mounted on earlier dreadnoughts, providing her with increased firepower and range. The Orion's illustrious career began in earnest when she saw action in the Battle of Jutland on May 31, 1916. The clash between the British and German fleets was the largest naval battle of World War I and one of the largest in naval history. The Orion emerged from the battle relatively unscathed, having sustained only minor damage. Despite her survival, the Orion's days as an active warship were numbered. She was eventually decommissioned in 1919 and broken up for scrap in 1923.
