EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia (1861-1929) and his beloved family in 1903. The Grand Duke, who was the eldest son of Grand Duke Michael Nikolayevich (grand-uncle of Tsar Nicholas II), is seen here with his wife, Countess Elisabeth Torby (née Vassilyeva) (b. 1873), and two of their children: Nadejda (Nada) Mikhailovna Mountbatten, Marchioness of Milford Haven (28 March 1896 - 22 January 1963), and Count Michael de Torby (b. 1898). Grand Duke Michael lived an intriguing life, both in Russia and abroad. He first married morganatically, which meant his children were not considered royal, and settled in Keele Hall, Staffordshire, England. During the early years of the Great War, the Grand Duke and his family resided at Kenwood House in Hampstead, London, where they became prominent figures in the city's high society. The elegant Countess Elisabeth, dressed in a stunning gown, is seated next to her husband, while their two children, Nada and Michael, sit on the floor, playfully interacting with each other. Nada, who later married Prince Louis of Battenberg and became the Marchioness of Milford Haven, is shown with her long, curly hair, while her younger brother, Michael, wears a suit and a serious expression. This beautiful portrait, taken in 1903, offers a glimpse into the lives of the Grand Duke and his family, showcasing their warmth, love, and connection. The photograph is a testament to their rich history and the enduring legacy of the Russian imperial family.
