EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 14th-century tempera painting, known as the St. Emilian Tables, is an exquisite example of Gothic art housed at the Monastery of St. Emilian of Suso in Logrono, Spain, now displayed at the La Rioja Museum. The exterior panel, located to the left of the altarpiece, depicts scenes from the life of St. Emilian and the Virgin Mary. St. Emilian, also known as Millanus or Milianus, was a hermit who lived in the 11th century in the region of Cogolla, in northern Spain. He was renowned for his piety, humility, and devotion to music and the arts. In one scene, St. Emilian is depicted playing a zither, an instrument that was believed to have been gifted to him by the Virgin Mary herself. The painting's intricate details and rich colors bring the story of St. Emilian to life. In another scene, we see St. Emilian as a shepherd, tending to his cattle, surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of the Spanish countryside. The use of tempera painting technique, with its layered application of pigments in egg yolk or water, creates a sense of depth and texture that transports us back to the Middle Ages. The St. Emilian Tables are a testament to the artistic and spiritual heritage of Spain during the Gothic period. They offer a glimpse into the beliefs, values, and daily life of the people of the time, making them an invaluable historical and cultural treasure.
