EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the elegant and timeless beauty of Princess Alexandra, Duchess of Fife, as she bids farewell in her going away gown during a royal event in 1913. The gown, made of smoked grey charmeuse, features a coatee of intricately designed lace that matches the dress, with a tucked vest of ivory net and lace adding an air of delicacy. The ensemble is further accentuated with a touch of blue in the belt, creating a harmonious and cohesive look. The Duchess accessorized her outfit with a velvet cloak, adding an element of sophistication and warmth to the ensemble. She wore chinchilla and ermine furs, which were fashionable and luxurious accessories for royalty during that era. The dark grey velvet hat, adorned with a crown encircled by tailless ermine and a bunch of white osprey feathers, completes the outfit with a touch of elegance and grandeur. Princess Alexandra, who was the daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark and Queen Louise of Sweden, married the Duke of Fife, Arthur Balfour, on March 27, 1904, in a grand wedding ceremony. This photograph, taken eight years later, showcases her impeccable sense of style and fashion, which was a hallmark of the royal court during that period. The Duchess of Fife's going away gown is a testament to the enduring elegance and sophistication of royal fashion in the early 20th century.
