Ginger the dog attempting to board the ship, British Arctic
Engraving showing the dog Ginger attempting to board one of the ships of the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-1876. Ginger, like all the dogs of the expedition, was not allowed aboard either of the ships and the quartermaster (on left) was there to keep watch and prevent the dogs entering. In the summer of 1875 the British Admiralty sent Captain George Nares with two ships, HMS Alert and HMS Discovery, to make an attempt to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound. Although the attempt was unsuccessful, a new furthest North record was set, the coasts of Greenland and Ellesmere Island were charted and much scientific data gathered

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historical moment when Ginger, a courageous dog, attempted to board one of the ships of the British Arctic Expedition in 1875-1876. The engraving showcases Ginger's determination as he eagerly tries to join Captain George Nares and his crew on their quest to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound. However, like all the other dogs of the expedition, Ginger was not allowed aboard either ship. In this image, we see a quartermaster positioned on the left side of the frame, diligently watching over Ginger and preventing him from entering. Despite his disappointment at being left behind, Ginger's presence symbolizes both companionship and loyalty that these canine members brought to such arduous expeditions. Although their attempt to reach the North Pole proved unsuccessful, this expedition set a new furthest North record while charting previously unexplored coasts of Greenland and Ellesmere Island. Additionally, valuable scientific data was gathered during this voyage. As we admire this historical engraving today, it serves as a reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit for knowledge and exploration. It highlights not only our fascination with uncharted territories but also our deep connection with animals who have accompanied us throughout history on daring adventures into unknown lands.
