The General Strike - Guards return from duty 1926
Londoners watching a procession of The 1st Brigade of Guards, with massed bands, marching through the City past the Royal Exchange and Mansion House. The Brigade was marching towards Waterloo in order to return to Aldershot at the end of the General Strike, during which they were encamped at Victoria Park in Hackney, East London and London Docks. In support of a strike by coal miners over the issue of threatened wage cuts, the Trades Union Congress called a General Strike in early May 1926. The strike only involved certain key industrial sectors (docks, electricity, gas, railways) but, in the face of well-organised government emergency measures and lack of real public support, it collapsed after nine days Date: 1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment during the General Strike of 1926 in London, as the 1st Brigade of Guards, with massed bands playing, make their way through the city towards Waterloo Station to return to their barracks at Aldershot. The soldiers had been encamped in Victoria Park and the London Docks during the strike, which was called by the Trades Union Congress in support of coal miners facing threatened wage cuts. The strike, which only involved certain key industrial sectors, lasted for nine days but ultimately collapsed due to well-organized government emergency measures and a lack of public support. Londoners gathered to watch the procession of the Guards, marking the end of this significant chapter in British labor history. The image offers a glimpse into the past, providing a poignant reminder of the political and social tensions that once shaped the city's streets.
