EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving showcases three remarkable marine species: the Flying Gurnard (Dactylopterus volitans), African Armored Searobin (Peristedion cataphractum), and the Hippolyte Cloquet (Chaetodactylus volitans, now known as Malarmat clouqueti). The illustration is taken from the esteemed "Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles" published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The Flying Gurnard, depicted in the center, is a unique fish with wing-like pectoral fins that allow it to leap out of the water and glide short distances. This intriguing behavior earned it the common name "flying gurnard." The African Armored Searobin, on the left, is characterized by its bony plates and elongated dorsal fin. This armored protection makes it an effective defense against predators. Lastly, the Hippolyte Cloquet, on the right, is a small, colorful fish with distinctive markings. The illustration was created by the skilled artist Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was expertly executed by Massard, under the direction of Turpin. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this engraving serve as a testament to the artistry and scientific accuracy of the time.
