Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935) was a French military officer who became the center of a highly controversial and divisive affair in late 19th century France. Born into a Jewish family, Dreyfus rose through the ranks of the French military, eventually becoming a captain in the General Staff. In 1894, he was falsely accused of treason and espionage in a case that came to be known as the Dreyfus Affair. The evidence against him was later found to be fabricated, but Dreyfus was convicted and sentenced to life in prison on Devil's Island. This portrait of Alfred Dreyfus was drawn by Getzel, a Polish artist who was living in Paris at the time of the affair. The drawing captures Dreyfus as a determined and resolute figure, with a serious expression and piercing gaze. Despite the injustice he had suffered, Dreyfus remained committed to the ideals of the French military and the rule of law.
