The Chapel Royal at St. Jamess Palace, scene of numerous royal weddings including that of Queen Victoria, George V and Queen Mary and, in this instance, Princess Alexandra, Duchess of Fife to Prince Arthur of Connaught. It is shown here altered and re-arranged for the wedding. EDITORS COMMENTS
1. The Transformed Chapel Royal at St. James Palace: A Royal Venue for a Royal Wedding (1913) The Chapel Royal at St. James Palace, a historic and revered site of numerous royal weddings, is shown here in an altered and rearranged state, in preparation for the marriage of Princess Alexandra, Duchess of Fife, to Prince Arthur of Connaught in 1913. Due to the small size of the chapel, several structural modifications had to be made to accommodate the large number of guests in attendance. The Chapel Royal, located within the St. James's Palace complex in London, has been the setting for many significant royal events throughout history. Some of the most notable royal weddings that have taken place here include those of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840, King George V and Queen Mary in 1893, and now, Princess Alexandra and Prince Arthur. In order to accommodate the large wedding party and their guests, the chapel underwent several alterations. One of the most significant changes made was the removal of the pews, which were a permanent fixture in the chapel. This allowed for more space and flexibility in the layout of the chapel, enabling the seating of a larger number of guests. The transformation of the Chapel Royal for the wedding of Princess Alexandra and Prince Arthur was a testament to the adaptability of this historic venue. Despite its small size, the chapel continued to serve as a fitting and elegant backdrop for this royal event, showcasing its enduring significance as a royal venue for weddings and other important occasions. This photograph captures a moment in time, as the Chapel Royal is prepared for yet another royal wedding, reflecting the rich history and tradition of the British monarchy.
