EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 19th century illustration, Plate 63 from Recherches pour servir à l'histoire naturelle des Mammifères (Researches for the Natural History of Mammals) by the renowned French naturalists Dr. Henri Milne-Edwards (1800-1885) and Dr. Alphonse Milne-Edwards (1835-1900), depicts the Cervulus lacrymans, also known as the Chinese water deer. This endearing mammal is native to eastern Asia, specifically in China and the Korean peninsula. The Cervulus lacrymans is an even-toed ungulate, belonging to the family Cervidae and the order Artiodactyla. It is unique among deer species as it is the only true deer without antlers, instead, it possesses short, tusk-like canines. This deer is also known as the "tear deer" due to the distinctive markings under its eyes, which resemble tears. The Milne-Edwards brothers were pioneers in the field of mammalogy, and their work, published between 1868 and 1874, is considered a seminal contribution to the understanding of the natural history of mammals. This illustration, produced during the height of the European colonial era, showcases the brothers' meticulous attention to detail and their commitment to documenting the natural world. The Cervulus lacrymans continues to inhabit wetlands and forests in eastern Asia, and although its population has declined due to habitat loss and poaching, conservation efforts are ongoing to protect this fascinating and distinctive species.
