EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Antoine-Pierre-Joseph-Marie Barnave, a prominent French politician of the Revolutionary period, circa 1790. Barnave, born in 1761, was a key figure in the early stages of the French Revolution, serving as a deputy to the National Assembly and a member of the Constituent Assembly. He was an advocate for the rights of the common people and played a crucial role in drafting the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Despite his revolutionary fervor, Barnave's political allegiances shifted, and he became increasingly critical of the radical elements within the Revolution. In 1791, he voted against the abolition of the monarchy, leading to his expulsion from the National Assembly. In the following year, he was accused of treason and arrested, ultimately leading to his execution by guillotine on November 28, 1793. In this portrait, Barnave is depicted as a young, intelligent man with a thoughtful expression. He wears a wig, a white necktie, and a waistcoat adorned with intricate buttons. The print captures the historical significance of Barnave's life and the tumultuous times in which he lived. His tragic end serves as a reminder of the complexities and uncertainties of the French Revolution, a period of profound change that continues to fascinate scholars and the public alike.
