EDITORS COMMENTS
Armistice Day 1918: A Gathering of Healing and Hope at Quex Park VAD Hospital This evocative photograph captures a moment of celebration and unity on Armistice Day 1918, as patients and staff of the Quex Park VAD Hospital (Voluntary Aid Detachment) came together in front of Quex House to mark the end of the First World War. Among them are Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton and his wife Hannah, along with their four children. Hannah, a remarkable woman, served as the Commandant of the Birchington Detachment, which ran the hospital from its opening in October 1914 until its closure in January 1919. Surrounding the Powell-Cotton family are a diverse group of individuals whose lives had been touched by the war. Among them is Camille Van Dyck, a Belgian soldier and former patient who had been struck dumb through shock but continued to work as an orderly. Jack Hedge, the hospital's masseur, stands in the back row, wearing his all-white uniform. Mary Marlowe, an Australian actress and novelist, is also present, wearing a small Australian flag in pride. Fanny Watson, a dedicated nurse with three white service stripes on her arm, indicating her lengthy service, is seated on the ground. The Quex Park VAD Hospital played a vital role in the care and recovery of countless soldiers and civilians during the war years. This poignant image serves as a testament to the healing power of community, hope, and the indomitable human spirit.
