EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Alexander Duff (1806-1878), a pioneering Scottish missionary who dedicated his life to spreading the gospel in India during the Victorian era. The image, taken in 1878, shows Duff in advanced age, with a stern yet compassionate expression, as he gazes off into the distance. His white beard and balding head are framed by a dark shawl, adding to the sense of wisdom and reverence. Born in Scotland, Duff was ordained as a minister in the Free Church of Scotland in 1831. However, it was not until 1839 that he set sail for India, where he would spend the next four decades of his life. Duff was a trailblazer in Scottish missionary work in India, establishing the first Free Church mission in Madras in 1842. He went on to found the Free Church College in Madras in 1854, which would become a leading center of theological education in India. Despite facing numerous challenges, including opposition from local authorities and religious tensions, Duff remained committed to his mission. He was known for his tireless work ethic, his deep spiritual convictions, and his compassion for the Indian people. Duff's legacy lives on in the many institutions and communities he helped to establish, and his story continues to inspire generations of Scottish missionaries and Indian Christians. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and dedication of Scottish missionaries like Alexander Duff, who left their homeland to bring the message of Christianity to India in the 19th century. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the indelible impact of Scottish missionary work on the history of India.
