HonorA Daumier Ribalds Les Ribaudes 1848a'1849

Honore Daumier: The Ribalds (Les Ribaudes), Honore Daumier, 1848-1849, Oil on canvas, Daumier was one of the greatest caricaturists of the nineteenth century. He created thousands of keenly observed images of the social types he encountered in Paris. This painting shows three peasant women walking down a path. Two of them are twisting their bodies, and one is gesturing to something behind her. This painting is actually a study for a more complex work called The Miller, His Son, and the Ass, based on a fable in which a traveling father and son are continuously harassed by passers-by, all of whom have a different opinion as to how the donkey should be treated. Here, however, you don t see the main subject. Daumier instead focuses on the passersby, conveying the rudeness of their behavior through clumsy, contorted body language. Overall: 50 3/4 x 38 in. (128.9 x 96.5 cm)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Honore Daumier's masterpiece, "The Ribalds (Les Ribaudes)" painted between 1848 and 1849. Daumier, renowned as one of the greatest caricaturists of the nineteenth century, meticulously depicted various social types he encountered in Paris through his keen observations. In this particular painting, three peasant women are seen strolling along a path. The composition portrays two of them twisting their bodies while one gestures towards something behind her. Interestingly, this artwork serves as a study for a more elaborate piece called "The Miller, His Son, and the Ass". Inspired by a fable where a father and son face constant harassment from passers-by with differing opinions on how to treat their donkey. However, what makes this print intriguing is that it does not showcase the main subjects but rather focuses on these bystanders. Through clumsy and contorted body language, Daumier skillfully conveys the rudeness exhibited by these individuals. Their actions mirror society's tendency to impose unsolicited advice or judgments upon others. Measuring at an impressive size of 50 3/4 x 38 inches (128.9 x 96.5 cm), this print allows art enthusiasts to appreciate Daumier's mastery up close and personal. It offers viewers an opportunity to delve into the artist's mind and witness his ability to capture human behavior with such precision and wit.
