Zucker rocket, 1933

Zucker rocket in 1933. Gerhard Zucker (1908-1985) was a German who worked in the field of rocket mail. His rockets were essentially hollow hulls with motors, of the sort used in fireworks attached, and almost all exploded on, or prior to, take-off. However he managed to sell a large number of stamps for mail to be used in his rocket. In July 1934 he attempted to fly a rocket between the town of Harris in Scotland and the Isle of Scarp. The attempt failed and he was deported to Germany, where he was forbidden from further rocket experiments. In 1964 though, he resumed his work and an accident resulted in the death of a student. He died in 1985

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the infamous Zucker rocket, a remarkable creation by German pioneer Gerhard Zucker in 1933. As an engineer and physicist, Zucker dedicated his life to exploring the possibilities of rocket mail. His rockets were ingeniously constructed with hollow hulls and attached fireworks motors, although their success rate was far from perfect as most exploded during take-off or even before. Despite these setbacks, Zucker's determination led him to sell a significant number of stamps for mail that would be transported by his rockets. In July 1934, he embarked on a daring mission to fly a rocket between Harris in Scotland and the Isle of Scarp. Unfortunately, this attempt ended in failure and resulted in his deportation back to Germany. Authorities forbade him from conducting any further rocket experiments. However, after three decades of silence, Zucker resumed his groundbreaking work in 1964. Tragically though, an accident occurred during one of these experiments which claimed the life of a student involved. Gerhard Zucker passed away in 1985 but left behind an enduring legacy as one of Europe's early pioneers in space flight and rocketry. This photograph serves as both a testament to his unwavering passion for engineering advancements and a reminder of the risks inherent within such pioneering endeavors.
