Jigsaw Puzzles from Science Photo Library
Fossilised cone of Araucaria sp. tree
Fossil cone. A fossilised cone from a tree of the genus Araucaria, members of which still survive today. The individual seeds can clearly be seen around the core of the cone. Conifers such as this evolved around 250 million years ago, and flourished in the Mesozoic era. Their supremacy lasted until the fruit-bearing trees developed around 75 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period. The surviving members include the monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana), a popular decorative tree in larger gardens due to its distinctive form. The trees are native to the Southern Hemisphere (apart from Africa), and may be considered " living fossils"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a fossilised cone of an Araucaria sp. tree, offering us a glimpse into the ancient world. The intricate details reveal individual seeds surrounding the core of the cone, providing evidence of its reproductive cycle millions of years ago. Conifers like this one emerged approximately 250 million years ago and thrived during the Mesozoic era. They reigned supreme until fruit-bearing trees evolved around 75 million years ago, marking the end of their dominance during the Cretaceous period. However, some members of this resilient genus still exist today. One such survivor is the monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana), known for its distinctive form and often found gracing larger gardens as a decorative feature. These remarkable trees are native to various parts of the Southern Hemisphere, excluding Africa, and can be considered "living fossils" due to their ancient lineage. The photograph not only captures the beauty and intricacy of this fossilised cone but also serves as a reminder that life on Earth has continuously evolved over millions of years. It offers us an opportunity to appreciate our planet's rich history while marveling at nature's ability to adapt and endure through time. This stunning image comes from Science Photo Library, showcasing their dedication to capturing scientific wonders in exquisite detail without any commercial intent or use mentioned in relation to it.
