Earth-Venus conjunction, 19th century
Earth-Venus conjunction, 19th-century artwork. Venus (centre) is the second planet from the Sun (right). This is an inferior conjunction, which occurs when Venus lies between the Earth (left) and the Sun. In this position, Venus is dark (similar to when the Moon is new ) and difficult to observe unless a rare transit of Venus occurs (when it passes across the Sun). Venus is at its brightest 37 days before and after its inferior conjunction. Artwork from the 19th volume (first period of 1897) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork captures the mesmerizing Earth-Venus conjunction, a celestial phenomenon that occurs when Venus aligns between our planet and the Sun. In this rare position, Venus appears dark and is challenging to observe unless an extraordinary transit of Venus takes place, where it gracefully passes across the face of the Sun. The second planet from the Sun, Venus shines as the central figure in this monochrome illustration. The artist skillfully depicts this astronomical event from a historical perspective, showcasing their understanding of planetary science and orbital mechanics. This remarkable print originates from La Science Illustree, a renowned French popular science weekly magazine published during that era. As we gaze at this image, we are transported back to a time when scientific exploration was blossoming. It reminds us of humanity's eternal fascination with space and our continuous quest for knowledge about our solar system's mysteries. Let us appreciate how far we have come since then in unraveling these cosmic enigmas while cherishing these beautiful remnants of scientific history captured by Louis Figuier in his iconic annual volume. This artwork serves as a testament to human curiosity and ingenuity throughout centuries past and present.
