Stomata are breathing pores scattered over the leaf surface, & sometimes stem, that regulate the exchange of gases between the leafs interior & the atmosphere. Stomatal closure is a natural response to darkness or drought as a means of conserving water. Contrastingly, on the right side of this magnified photograph, an open stoma comes into view. It exemplifies how when these guard cells are filled with water and exhibit optimal turgor pressure, they allow gases to freely pass through.
